Levi's Birth Story

I find it hard to believe that I'm already writing another birth story! It seems like I just wrote Lily's. Ha!

Levi's due date was December 24, 2010. I pretty much assumed he would be late like Lily was - and that was totally fine with me. I was happy to be able to participate in both our family's Christmas get-togethers, especially since it was Lily's first Christmas. As soon as Christmas was over though, I was ready to have the baby!

I had been having contractions, some sporadic and some consistent, for a few weeks. When my midwife checked me on December 27th, my cervix was up behind the baby's head  but it was very thinned out. I ate 3 pineapple cores between December 26th and December 29th, I exercised everyday, did tons of squats, and got my house somewhat cleaned.

On Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 29th) I just started feeling funny. I don't know how to explain what I was feeling - there was no pain, and I wasn't really having many contractions - I just felt weird. As we were leaving the house to go to prayer meeting, I told Jacob that I wouldn't be surprised if we had a baby that night. I think I was more "hoping" to have a baby that night than I was really thinking we would.

We headed to bed just like normal, with me still feeling "weird" but having no grounds for the feeling. I was up and down all night using the bathroom. Then at 4:55am I was jerked awake by a very intense contraction. Once it was over, I got up and just walked around a little, got a drink, and sat down in the living room to check my email. At 5:00am I had another contraction, then at 5:05, 5:10, and 5:15! After the one at 5:15 I went back to bed to see if they would continue. I had one at 5:20 and then at 5:25.

The one at 5:25 was really hard and long. I started trying to wake up Jacob during that contraction. It sounded something like this,

me: "Uh, babe...I think we need to head to the clinic" {deep groaning and breathing to get through the contraction}
Jacob: snoring
me: "Babe! ... I really think we need to head to the clinic" {followed by more groaning and breathing}
Jacob: snoring and rolling over
me: while shaking Jacob - "Babe! Don't you want to go have this baby?!!!" {groaning through the end of the contraction}
Jacob: wide awake now and jumping out of bed - "Are you serious?!"

So Jacob called my mom (she was coming to the clinic to take care of Lily), we quickly got dressed, got our last minute things packed in our bags, got Lily, and headed to the car. I had several more contractions in the midst of all the hurry. Each one was growing in intensity and I told Jacob we needed to hurry - since we had a 45 minute drive ahead of us.

During the drive the contractions slowed to 7 minutes apart, but they were still just as strong and long. Thankfully there wasn't too much traffic at that time of morning, and Jacob only had to use his flashers and blow the horn once - and that was because there were these two cars, one in the left lane and one in the right lane, driving super slow side by side and we couldn't get around them! Ugh!

We got to the clinic around 6:30am and just sat and talked through a couple contractions. Then we headed back to the bedroom to listen to the baby's heartbeat. His heartbeat was good and my blood pressure was good. Then Linda checked me - to our utter surprise, I was completely effaced, 8cm dialated, and +2 station! We were both shocked! I was basically in transition.

While I waited to push, I sat on the birth ball - which helped ease alot of pressure, and ate peanut butter toast. My sweet mom rubbed my back and Jacob held my hand and encouraged me through each contraction. Lily was so precious - she knew I wasn't feeling good and she just kept coming over and hugging me and putting her head on me. It was so sweet! She went down for a nap before Levi was born, so she wasn't actually in the room then. The craziest thing about this labor was that my contractions stayed pretty much 7 minutes apart up until I was pushing. With Lily, they went from 7 minutes, down to 5 minutes, down to 3 minutes apart.

Around 8:30, my midwife checked me again and I was fully dialated. Right after that, my water broke and I started feeling like I needed to push. The contractions got a little closer together, but it seemed like I would push and then wait and wait and wait for another contraction. The waiting was seriously wearing me out! I was ready to hurry up and get the baby out! Ha!

It only took 5-6 pushes to get him out, but like I said it seemed like forever. Levi was born at 9:22am!

Linda immediately laid him up on my chest. My heart was so full of joy and thankfulness. I was bawling and just thanking God for giving me His strength to bring this precious boy into the world.

Then I heard the words "cleft lip" and my heart stopped. I've seen very sad pictures of babies and children with severe cleft lips and palettes, and that's all I could imagine (I hadn't seen Levi's face yet).

In an instant my joy plunged into sorrow. I started losing lots of blood and I was given a shot of pitocin to help get it stopped. Then my uterus wasn't hardening or coming back up and the bleeding continued, so I was given another shot of pitocin. Finally the bleeding was under control.

When I saw my sweet boy's face I realized that his cleft lip is not severe - we are SO blessed! It is only a cleft lip, and not a cleft palette. God is good!

A little while after Levi was born Jacob brought Lily in to meet him, Andrea (Linda's wonderful apprentice) weighed and measured Levi, then I got a shower and ate some lunch. I stayed in bed most of the afternoon because I was a little faint feeling from the blood loss.

I've been really surprised (in a good way!) that I've hardly even been sore from having Levi. I mean seriously, even though I didn't tear at all with Lily or Levi, sitting was uncomfortable for like a week after birthing Lily. This time I haven't had an uncomfortable-ness. I must say, it's definitely a blessing!

Psalm 139:14
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works and that my soul knoweth right well.

Glimpses of Christmas

Well, we have no baby news yet...except that he's still hanging out where it's warm! lol. I'm feeling really good and enjoying these last few days with my hubby and baby girl. I remember being so eager for Lily to hurry up and get here, and how dreadful those 4 days were that she was overdue - but this time is different. I don't feel in a hurry. I'm doing my best to cherish every moment as a family of three.

Yes, I am ready for Lil' Guy to get here, and I certainly hope he comes in the next couple of days! Today we got our Christmas tree put away today, laundry done, baby clothes organized, and Christmas presents put away. Tomorrow I plan to clean the bathrooms and sweep/vacuum the floors then our house will be pretty much in order. I have this thing about wanting to come home to a clean house. ha!

I wanted to share a few pictures from our Christmas - all these pictures are stolen from my sister's facebook! I still need to upload all the pictures from our camera. Guess I should do that tomorrow too. ha.
Lily on Christmas morning at my parent's
We had a White Christmas in Alabama!!! It's the first time I ever remember it snowing on Christmas - the closest thing we ever had was an ice storm over Christmas that put our electricity out for 5 days!
Lily loved playing in (and tasting!) the snow
Jacob, my three brothers, and bro-in-law built this huge snowman!! Not only do we "never" get a White Christmas, we "never" get enough snow to build this big of a snowman!

I will hopefully share more about our Christmas in the coming days! I'm planning to get my sister to update when Lil' Guy arrives, so you can be watching for that soon...hopefully.

Happy Due Date!

Yay! Little Man and I have made it to 40 weeks!! Now if he will just stay inside until after tomorrow! ha. Even though Lily was four days late, we didn't take a 40 week picture to compare this pic to. Oh well.

Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!

39 weeks

39 weeks with Lily and Little Guy

Well folks, I am still here! I was actually 39 weeks on Friday...but failed to get a picture until last night. So we are 3 days away from Lil' Guy's due date!

I'm feeling good, but I can tell I'm slowing down and not having as much energy. I'm still exercising and trying to eat alot - although I haven't gained any more weight. Oh well.

We're almost finished packing our bags (yes, they were packed much sooner with Lily...but I guess it has something to do with subsequent babies...), our Christmas shopping is done (we just have a ton of gifts to wrap!), and I have a few more things to bake, then I think we can just sit back and enjoy Christmas and possibly have a baby!

38 weeks

38 weeks with Lily and Little Man

Thank you all so much for your sweet encouragement about my rough week! I must say, I am so thankful that God's grace is sufficient for our every need, and He never gives us more than we can bear. Many times last week I was at my wit's end and my strength's end and He filled me with more patience and more strength. He is so good!

This week is definitely off to a better start - Lily decided last night to eat more than just applesauce, so that makes this mommy happy! I guess the ear infections made her not want to eat anything but applesauce and her bottles, of course. It was so hard because she's never ever refused any food before! Now we just have to get sleeping through the night down again and I'll know she's 100% better!

I'm honestly feeling great, and it's just fine by me if Little Man stays put until the week between Christmas and New Years. I've been able to slowly mark things off my crazy long to-do list, so that's helped me feel more prepared!

This is Jacob's last week of teaching, Christmas concerts (conducting), and Christmas gigs! I am so ready for him to have a break! Lily and I hardly saw him at all last week and this week isn't much better...but we are thankful for the work and for the light at the end of the tunnel! Ha!

Happy Monday!

37 weeks

37 weeks with Lily and Little Guy

Thank you all for your encouragement about my weight gain (or lack thereof. ha!). I'm definitely doing better emotionally this week. Ah, pregnancy hormones ... you've got to love them! HA!

I'm so looking forward to my little boy being here. Life is going to be crazy busy for awhile, but I know by God's grace it will be ok.

36 weeks

36 weeks with Lily and Little Man

I think the two pictures are the most similar they have been this whole pregnancy! Lily had dropped by this point.

I been feeling a lot more tired this week, but it could be from all the rain we've been having! One concern that I've had is that I've only gained 18lbs (so far) with Little Man and I gained 25lbs with Lily. Even after two big Thanksgiving dinners I didn't gain anything. I mean, I'm ok with not gaining a lot, I just want our little boy to be getting enough nourishment! If I hadn't lost all my baby weight from Lily before I got pregnant again, I wouldn't really expect to gain as much, but I started at the exact same weight with both pregnancies. Anyway, I talked with my midwife, and she reassured me that everything is ok - that the baby is growing and doing fine.

I'm busy this week getting out orders from my Etsy shop's Black Friday and Small Business Saturday sale and then I've got to get busy on Christmas shopping, goody baking, baby clothes organizing, and many other Christmas/Baby preparations!

35 weeks

35 weeks with Lily (on left) and Little Guy (on right)

In case anyone noticed, I missed doing a 34 week picture and update. Oh well, life happens! I'm doing really well and feeling great! I'm having a lot of contractions, but nothing out of the ordinary. Thankfully they aren't painful, just kind of annoying.

I can hardly believe we'll meet our little boy in 5ish weeks! This pregnancy has gone by so quickly!

33 weeks

33 weeks with Lily (on left) and Little Guy (on right)

I am carrying so low this time! Most of the non-maternity sweaters that I wore when I was pregnant with Lily are like belly shirts this time around! Ha.

Only 45 days until Little Man's due date!!

Only 8 weeks to go!! So much to do ... so little time! :-)

31 weeks

31 weeks with Lily and Little Guy

I did not purposely wear the same shirt! I actually didn't realize it until I went back on facebook to find my 31 week picture with Lily. Ha!

I'm doing pretty well! Sunday was a little scary - I had regular contractions (3-7 minutes apart) for 17 hours. They weren't painful contractions, I just had a lot of pressure and kind of felt sick to my stomach. I was in contact with my midwife throughout the day, drinking tons of water, and trying to keep my feet up. We were beginning to think that maybe I had a UTI, but I wasn't having any other symptoms.

My sweet midwife called Sunday evening and said to rub Lavender essential oil on my belly because that stops pre-term labor. Within an hour of using the Lavender the contractions had stopped and I was able to go to sleep! Praise God!

Thankfully I haven't had any more regular contractions this week and I've been feeling great (well ... as good as a big 'ole preggo girl can! ha)

29 weeks

29 weeks with Lily (left) and Little Guy (right)

I can't believe how fast this pregnancy is flying by! Only 11ish weeks to go! I'm feeling pretty well - still having contractions everyday, but they aren't regular, so I'm not worried.

I've been super tired this week. I asked Jacob this morning if we kissed goodnight last night because I couldn't remember - I was asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow (he said we did, btw :)!

I can't really think of anything that's changed this week - except for the fact that I've completely lost my mind. I can't even begin to tell you the number of times I've forgotten to do something or get something or tell somebody something. Ha! Guess it's mommy brain combined with pregnancy brain! LOL.

28 weeks

28 weeks with Lily (on left) and our baby boy (on right)

Ya'll, we have kind of decided that we aren't going to name our little guy Jacob Jr (JJ) after all. I know, call us crazy for changing our minds. Ha! We're still discussing names that we like and I will let you know when we decide for sure and for certain!

I'm feeling pretty well. Over the weekend I had lots of pretty strong contractions that were regular for several hours. It kind of scared me. I talked to my midwife and she said that you feel contractions earlier on with each pregnancy and that I should be sure to drink tons of water (which I was already doing) and let her know if they got longer, stronger, or closer together. Thankfully they stopped and I haven't had anymore today.  We're just praying our little man stays put for at least another 9 weeks!

I'm still exercising everyday - either walking or doing a pregnancy dvd. My goal is to gain what I did with Lily (25lbs) since I started out at the exact same weight with both pregnancies. So far I'm right on track!

We registered at Target last week, which was lots of fun! We're not planning to do a full-fledged nursery this time. What we're going to do is put a crib in our guest room and leave the double bed up as well. We've never had time to paint or anything in that room, so we're going to do it in blue and brown. I think it'll be cute! We certainly need to get started on it soon!

Hope ya'll have a great Monday!

27 weeks

27 weeks with Lily (left) and Baby Boy (right)

I'm feeling pretty good. This was a really rough week though. Lily has had a cold all week on top of cutting 3 teeth! Yes, that makes for much loss of sleep, lots of grumpiness, and loss of patience. Thankfully today was a much better day, and I'm hoping and praying she is on the mend!

Ya'll have a great weekend!
