1 month

My sweet little man is one month old today! How fast these days are flying by. Yes we have hard days when both babies are crying, needing to be held and comforted, but for the most part the last month has been great! I want to just soak up all I can of these days because before long my babies will be grown up.

So what's Levi been up to lately...
  • eating! Boy oh boy does this fella love his food! He's eating 4oz of {homemade} goat milk formula every 3 hours.
  • sleeping! Next to eating, Levi's favorite past time is sleeping. He takes 3-4 good naps each day and he's been sleeping 4-5 straight hours at night (last night he gave me 6 hours, but I'm not counting on that continuing - although it would be nice!)
  • growing! He's about 7lbs 4oz now, wearing newborn size diapers and clothes.
  • fussing! I hate to say it, but he's been kind of fussy the last few days. I'm not sure if it's gas or what. Whenever I put him in the swing or bouncy seat he fusses. Hopefully he'll do better this week! I do wear him alot but with Lily still needing to be picked up/carried it's hard to carry them both.
Unfortunately Levi seems to have inherited his Pap-aw's un-photogenic genes!
He was very impressed about being dressed up for a photoshoot! HA!

"Mom! Can we be done already?!"
I couldn't believe how well he held his head up in this picture! Guess it was out of frustration. lol

Ok ya'll, this is just a shameless plug for my friend Cheryl at The Groovy Mommy! I can't help myself...I love her and her awesome products!

These are just a few items in her shop - tote bags, bibs, burp cloths, washcloths, and a collapsible basket!

Love these!

Aren't these precious?!

You should go check out The Groovy Mommy - you will not be disappointed!

Have a great weekend :o)

3 weeks

 Levi Jackson is 3 weeks old today! He's started smiling a little like you can see in the picture - it's so sweet!
Do not be fooled! This picture does not accurately portray my son's behavior most of today - I think he's been suffering a bad case of gas. Poor guy! Thankfully he seems better this evening!

Solo

Today I got brave and headed out of the house with Lily and Levi for our first shopping trip without Jacob. We only needed a few things from the store, and normally we would've "made do" until our weekly shopping trip, but both babies were fussy and I thought some fresh air and a change of scenery would do us all good!
Levi slept the whole time and Lily was so good! We just went to Kroger and then came home for Lily's naptime.

Lily is still working on being gentle with Levi - she's usually really sweet and pats him, but sometimes she gets a little too rough. You can see her little hand in the bottom of this picture, and I'm not sure if Levi was happy or scared, but his face cracks me up. Ha!

One last random picture from today - I found Lily like this when I came back into the living room from changing Levi's diaper. Yes, that is a strainer she is sitting in! LOL.

Ketchup Lovin' Girl

Last night we got 5 Guy's Burgers and Fries for supper (to go). I cut up some hamburger for Lily and put  a little squirt of ketchup on her high chair tray. Oh my word, she absolutely loved it!

{Sidenote: It was her first time to try ketchup because up until just recently acidic foods were bothering her little bum.}

 By the end of the meal she was dipping everything in the ketchup - grapes, pears, granola bar...gag! ha.

Of course she ended up making a huge mess, but it was so worth it to see her having such a good time!

Funny girl!

2 weeks

My little Levi is 2 weeks old today!

He is adjusting so well to our family (as we are to him!). He's just about outgrown preemie clothes (in length), but newborn size is still huge on him. He eats about every three hours during the day and about every four hours at night. I'm so thankful that he goes right back to sleep after eating at night - such a blessing for this mama!

Last night was Levi's first time to go to church! We would've gone last Sunday, but Lily was sick and I kept them both at home.

Sick Days

My little lady caught a cold and has been feeling pretty yucky the last few days. Poor girl! We've been spending lots of extra time cuddling and trying to get her better.

I must say, I am SO ready for her to feel better, not just for her sake, but mine too! All my comfy clothes I wear around the house are covered in dried snot - why in the world is it more fun to wipe your nose on mommy than to let mommy use a tissue on your nose?? Ha!
 She loves her baby dolls, her truck, and her paci!

Silly girl loves playing in the baby swing. Levi doesn't like it, so we're letting Lily play with it. She's gotten to be a pro at getting in and out of it on her own. She thinks it the neatest thing ever that she gets to play in it!

It's nice for me too - I can buckle her in and give her a book, and she'll happily swing for 10-15 minutes! Of course I stay right in the room with her, but I can get some things done without wondering where she is and what she's getting into!

Our little man is growing so fast! He's doing great! We were slammed with about 8 inches of snow Sunday night, and everything in Alabama shuts down at even the prediction of snow, so we haven't talked to the doctor yet. Thank you all so much for your encouraging comments and your prayers for us!

To Answer Your Questions

Several people have asked about Levi's cleft lip and whether he will have to have surgery. Although there is nothing set in stone yet, this is what we know so far:
  • Levi's palette is intact. It is arched slightly higher on one side and the two sides are not equal, but the doctors we have seen said that it is not a problem and will not need surgery.
  • There is a "nick" in his gum that will need to be repaired.
  • His lip is cleft directly in the midline, which according to the plastic surgeon (Dr. A), is pretty unusual. The surgeon is consulting with his partners over the weekend and we find out on Monday if they are going to refer us to a specialist or if they will do the surgery. If Dr. A does the surgery, he wants to wait until Levi is 10-12 weeks old.
  • Levi is nursing great - not hindered at all by his lip or gum. I'm thankful to be able to breastfeed him since I had such a hard time with Lily! I've not been producing enough milk to satisfy him so we are supplementing with goat's milk. I'm taking tons of Fenugreek, drinking tons of water and Mother's Milk Tea, and eating lots of calories. Hopefully my supply will pick up - but I'm not stressed out about it. I'm incredibly thankful for each day that he gets breastmilk.
Ya'll have a great weekend!

1 week

I cannot believe my sweet little man is already 1 week old!

He is such a great baby and we are so thankful for him.

Our family is adjusting quite well so far...although Jacob starts back teaching tomorrow. Hopefully everything will continue to go smoothly!

Levi's Birth Story

I find it hard to believe that I'm already writing another birth story! It seems like I just wrote Lily's. Ha!

Levi's due date was December 24, 2010. I pretty much assumed he would be late like Lily was - and that was totally fine with me. I was happy to be able to participate in both our family's Christmas get-togethers, especially since it was Lily's first Christmas. As soon as Christmas was over though, I was ready to have the baby!

I had been having contractions, some sporadic and some consistent, for a few weeks. When my midwife checked me on December 27th, my cervix was up behind the baby's head  but it was very thinned out. I ate 3 pineapple cores between December 26th and December 29th, I exercised everyday, did tons of squats, and got my house somewhat cleaned.

On Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 29th) I just started feeling funny. I don't know how to explain what I was feeling - there was no pain, and I wasn't really having many contractions - I just felt weird. As we were leaving the house to go to prayer meeting, I told Jacob that I wouldn't be surprised if we had a baby that night. I think I was more "hoping" to have a baby that night than I was really thinking we would.

We headed to bed just like normal, with me still feeling "weird" but having no grounds for the feeling. I was up and down all night using the bathroom. Then at 4:55am I was jerked awake by a very intense contraction. Once it was over, I got up and just walked around a little, got a drink, and sat down in the living room to check my email. At 5:00am I had another contraction, then at 5:05, 5:10, and 5:15! After the one at 5:15 I went back to bed to see if they would continue. I had one at 5:20 and then at 5:25.

The one at 5:25 was really hard and long. I started trying to wake up Jacob during that contraction. It sounded something like this,

me: "Uh, babe...I think we need to head to the clinic" {deep groaning and breathing to get through the contraction}
Jacob: snoring
me: "Babe! ... I really think we need to head to the clinic" {followed by more groaning and breathing}
Jacob: snoring and rolling over
me: while shaking Jacob - "Babe! Don't you want to go have this baby?!!!" {groaning through the end of the contraction}
Jacob: wide awake now and jumping out of bed - "Are you serious?!"

So Jacob called my mom (she was coming to the clinic to take care of Lily), we quickly got dressed, got our last minute things packed in our bags, got Lily, and headed to the car. I had several more contractions in the midst of all the hurry. Each one was growing in intensity and I told Jacob we needed to hurry - since we had a 45 minute drive ahead of us.

During the drive the contractions slowed to 7 minutes apart, but they were still just as strong and long. Thankfully there wasn't too much traffic at that time of morning, and Jacob only had to use his flashers and blow the horn once - and that was because there were these two cars, one in the left lane and one in the right lane, driving super slow side by side and we couldn't get around them! Ugh!

We got to the clinic around 6:30am and just sat and talked through a couple contractions. Then we headed back to the bedroom to listen to the baby's heartbeat. His heartbeat was good and my blood pressure was good. Then Linda checked me - to our utter surprise, I was completely effaced, 8cm dialated, and +2 station! We were both shocked! I was basically in transition.

While I waited to push, I sat on the birth ball - which helped ease alot of pressure, and ate peanut butter toast. My sweet mom rubbed my back and Jacob held my hand and encouraged me through each contraction. Lily was so precious - she knew I wasn't feeling good and she just kept coming over and hugging me and putting her head on me. It was so sweet! She went down for a nap before Levi was born, so she wasn't actually in the room then. The craziest thing about this labor was that my contractions stayed pretty much 7 minutes apart up until I was pushing. With Lily, they went from 7 minutes, down to 5 minutes, down to 3 minutes apart.

Around 8:30, my midwife checked me again and I was fully dialated. Right after that, my water broke and I started feeling like I needed to push. The contractions got a little closer together, but it seemed like I would push and then wait and wait and wait for another contraction. The waiting was seriously wearing me out! I was ready to hurry up and get the baby out! Ha!

It only took 5-6 pushes to get him out, but like I said it seemed like forever. Levi was born at 9:22am!

Linda immediately laid him up on my chest. My heart was so full of joy and thankfulness. I was bawling and just thanking God for giving me His strength to bring this precious boy into the world.

Then I heard the words "cleft lip" and my heart stopped. I've seen very sad pictures of babies and children with severe cleft lips and palettes, and that's all I could imagine (I hadn't seen Levi's face yet).

In an instant my joy plunged into sorrow. I started losing lots of blood and I was given a shot of pitocin to help get it stopped. Then my uterus wasn't hardening or coming back up and the bleeding continued, so I was given another shot of pitocin. Finally the bleeding was under control.

When I saw my sweet boy's face I realized that his cleft lip is not severe - we are SO blessed! It is only a cleft lip, and not a cleft palette. God is good!

A little while after Levi was born Jacob brought Lily in to meet him, Andrea (Linda's wonderful apprentice) weighed and measured Levi, then I got a shower and ate some lunch. I stayed in bed most of the afternoon because I was a little faint feeling from the blood loss.

I've been really surprised (in a good way!) that I've hardly even been sore from having Levi. I mean seriously, even though I didn't tear at all with Lily or Levi, sitting was uncomfortable for like a week after birthing Lily. This time I haven't had an uncomfortable-ness. I must say, it's definitely a blessing!

Psalm 139:14
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works and that my soul knoweth right well.
