Levi's Eyes

Thank you all so much for your prayers for us today! The long appointment went much better than I expected. Levi was a trooper! The doctor is amazing, and one of the best pediatric ophthalmologists in our area. I'm so thankful for how the Lord worked everything out.

Just a little background info about Levi's eyes - his left eye has had discharge/clogged tear duct since he was born. We have treated it multiple times with prescription cream, warm compresses, and massage, but nothing completely took care of it. Most babies eyes cross when they are newborn, but I started noticing Levi's left eye turning in more and more as he got older. I talked to our pediatrician about it (as well as several other people) and was told that we should watch it and he would probably grow out of it. When he was 7 months old, a complete stranger struck up a conversation with me about his eye. She was trained in opthalmology and she noticed how his eye was turning it. She encouraged me to go with my mama intuition and get him an appointment with a specialist. I began researching pediatric ophthalmologists in our area and found one I really liked in a larger city 40 minutes away. I called the office and of course I had to get a referral, so we went to the pediatrician and she said she would refer us. I completely forgot to tell her who I wanted to be referred to, but amazingly (thank you, Lord!) it was the same doctor I wanted to get in with! We had to wait three months for the appointment.

At the appointment today we found out that our sweet little man has Coloboma - basically, cleft eyes.

Medical definition - A cleft or gap in some part of the eye, such as the iris, lens, or retina, that is caused by a defect in the development of the eyeball. How much coloboma affects a person's vision depends on the size and location of the cleft and on whether it occurs in one or both eyes. For example, someone with only a tiny defect in the iris may have normal vision. However, a person with large defects in the retina and optic nerve may have limited vision.

The doctor said that "Levi got lucky" with his right eye. The cleft does not interfere with his vision at all! Praising God for this!! Unfortunately his left eye is pretty bad. It is extremely near-sighted and the cleft is interfering with his vision. The doctor couldn't tell the extent of the cleft because Levi wouldn't cooperate and look in the different directions she needed him to.

We have to start patching the good eye (right) for three hours a day to help strengthen the left eye. Also Levi is getting glasses with a strong lens to help the near-sightedness. We go back for a check up in 6 weeks and we will talk more about the clogged tear duct. He may have to have a procedure done to clean it out, but we don't know for sure.

As soon as we left the doctor's office, we headed to order his glasses. They are a special kind that only a few opticals in our area carry. We are getting him the style of the green glasses, but his are going to be a gray-blue color. We'll go pick them up in 7-10 days.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers. I know the patch and glasses are going to be a huge adjustment for Levi.

I will honestly say that it has been a rough day. I'm incredibly thankful for the God-given intuition we have as mamas because the doctor said Levi would likely have gone blind in his eye if we hadn't gotten it seen about this early. But, on the other hand, it is hard to see your baby facing more obstacles at such a young age. He's been through so much already. My heart is finding comfort and peace in Him who works ALL things together for good.

Thank you all again for your prayers! They mean the world to us!

  1. I'm so sorry to hear that, Kelly. This is such a big thing to us, but such a small thing to God. He is in control of it all! Remember the story of one of the blind men in the Bible? We are told that he lived his entire life with his affliction so that he might meet Jesus that one day, at that one time. And what a miracle was performed!! I'm sure his mother sat where you are right now and wondered why things were the way they were, but God used her son in a mighty way! I can't help but think that He plans to use this to bring glory to Him! Prayers for you and your family!

  3. oh my... I'm so sorry! I think at times things like this are harder on us mama's then the babies themselves. :( I am praying for you and Levi. On the up side... he looks pretty stinking cute in those glasses! ;)

  5. I'm so glad you were able to take in to a specialist and get some answers, Kelly. I'm a teacher for visually impaired students, and Levi might be eligible for early intervention vision services which will help him (and you) make the most of the vision that he has. You might want to search for agencies like Child Find or Part C interventions in your area. These identify and service children ages birth-3 years of age who have special needs/medical conditions.

    You are in prayer.

  6. Isn't the Lord's ways so amazing they just knock your socks off sometimes? I mean, He gives us "mama-intuition" (something I'm slowly learning is almost always RIGHT), He put you and that perfect stranger in the same place and had her notice Levi's eyes - and be social enough to share her wisdom with you, He worked it out so you were referred to the Dr. you wanted, etc. etc. etc.

I'm sure it is hard on your mommy-heart, it would be on mine! I will be praying for you and Levi as you go through all these adjustments and appointments together, and for some super-mama-bear strength and comfort for your heart :)

  8. I know it's hard for you as a mama, but look how adorable he's looking in those glasses!

God is so faithful, down to sending a complete stranger to you to say what you needed to hear to take care of your Levi. What a blessing that must have been.

  11. Sweet Kelly...Bless your heart, I know you must feel so sad about all of this. BUT I do know that your faith in our powerful God is so real...and I know He will guide you through this journey.

I am praising God for guiding you already. It is amazing how you knew how to listen and obey His prompting. I am thankful that the doctor knew what it was. I am praying that the patching and the glasses will greatly improve the eye.

He is faithful! And He will get you and Levi through this sweetie.

    Love, Linda

  12. Bless your heart! You and Levi will certainly be in my prayers. I had to have eye surgery when I was 2 and have worn glasses (now contacts) ever since. He does look adorable in his glasses. Hold tight to the knowledge that God is the Great Physician.

  13. Kelly,

Will absolutely keep you all in my prayers. What a cutie pie he is - God has such a plan for him, doesn't He??? It'll be amazing to see how He works this all out because it will. I know what a stress this must be to all of you - I will pray for you all and for little Levi with all this new adjusting that he has to do.

  14. Lots of prayers for you and Levi! He looks adorable in his glasses. Has your pediatrician given any thought to if this could be related to his cleft lip? I work in genetics so those things are always my first thought. It might not make a difference but sometimes knowing something is part of a larger issue can help mold treatment plans and whatnot. Certainly don't want to freak you out but like the woman in your story I felt compelled to say something. Keeping you all in my prayers!

  16. he does look adorable in those glasses :) I also wanted to say that a friend of mine recently had her son in for eye surgery. It sounds like about the same thing. He is doing great and his eyes are moving normally now! We are blessed with doctors who can do great things. But more than that, we are blessed with the Greatest Physician of all!

  17. Yep, those are the same glasses that Addison has (in pink). When you pick them up, make sure you get lots of extra stretchies for the back of the glasses. When Addison whips them off, the first thing she does it stretch them WAY out with her teeth and we go through them very fast. Once they get stretched out a certain amount, they just fall off her face...thus constant replacing is needed.
Praying for you! I know this isn't easy, but it is comforting to know that this is exactly how God trained Levi to be- and that He gives you the grace and knowledge to help him get through all of this!

  22. Levi is just the way God wanted him to be--and he's such a special little guy! I just couldn't imagine our family without him! He is such a trooper and teaches us how to go through our trials without fussing--too much! :) We'll keep praying and loving...and trusting God for healing! "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me (us and our family)!"
